Stations of the Cross

A statue of Jesus Christ was removed from the Armenian Cathedral of Lviv, Ukraine. It is being stored in a bunker. The last time the statue was removed was during World War II.

For those who desire more traditional spiritual practices, devotions for Stations of the Cross, will be posted on this blog Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays of Lent. A contemporary image of a statue of Christ appeared on social media this weekend in Ukraine. It’s juxtaposed with a 17th century image from Peter Paul Rubens.

The Way of the Cross

The Devotion known as The Way of the Cross, or Stations of the Cross, is an adaption to local usage of a custom widely observed by pilgrims to Jerusalem: the offering of prayer at a series of place that the city traditionally associated with the Lord’s passion and death.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy,

Our Father, who are in heaven, hallowed by thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory. Forever and even. Amen.

Descent from the Cross, 1612-1614.

We will glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ:

In whom is our salvation, our life and resurrection.

Let us pray.

Assist us mercifully with your help, O Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy upon contemplation of those mighty acts, whereby you have given us life and immortality, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
