Faith as a Way of Life

There’s a wonderful poem by poet Lucille Clifton, spring song, that beautifully weaves faith and life together.

the green of Jesus

is breaking the ground

and the sweet

smell of delicious Jesus

is opening the house and

the dance of Jesus music

has hold of the air and

the world is turning

in the body of Jesus and

the future is possible.

The weaving is a movement between obvious religious faith—Jesus; and life—cooking, singing, dancing. Mature spirituality always fuses the two together. The Black Church has unique expressions of this spirituality. I join in giving thanks to Jesus and life for the first black woman to be confirmed to serve as a Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
